The 2013 Annual Art Exhibition and Auction events at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) provide unique opportunities for art enthusiasts and collectors to view and purchase artwork by the rising stars and celebrated artists whose work reflects the scope of California’s vibrant and eclectic styles and interests. Silent and Live Auction goers can bid on a wide range of work including paintings, photography, works on paper, sculpture, mixed media and installation pieces. All ICA’s innovative exhibitions and educational programming.
In addition to featuring a range of works by emerging and established Bay Area talent, this year’s auction will present works by selected artists living and working in Southern California, primarily in the Greater Los Angeles area. This curatorial shift reflects the ICA’s commitment to reshaping its exhibition program to present ideas, works and personalities that comprise California’s largest and most diverse regions. With the addition of former Los Angeles-based d.e.n. contemporary founder and director, Donna Napper to the curatorial department in 2012, the ICA has widened the scope of its exhibitions and educational programs by introducing artists, styles and practices that define and shape the contemporary art landscape in the Southlands.
“The ICA’s annual auction exhibition is a ‘finger on the pulse’ presentation of what’s going on in the contemporary visual art scene throughout the state,” explains ICA Executive Director, Cathy Kimball. Among the donated works, this year’s auction exhibition will include exceptional works from nationally and internationally acclaimed artists including Fletcher Benton, Clive McCarthy, Manuel Neri and Gustavo Ramos Rivera. The ICA is also very excited to welcome new artists to the auction gallery for the first time, including Los Angeles-based artists Christopher Reynolds, Atilio Pernisco, Chris Trueman and Hilary Baker.
The 2013 Auction Exhibition runs from September 28th to October 26th. The Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, October 12th. This popular and lively event features an eclectic mix of works in a variety of mediums that will excite novice and long-time art collectors and enthusiasts alike. The first auction lot cloes at 7pm and the last/3rd auction lot closes at 8pm. Guests are invited to mix and mingle in the gallery until 10pm. Admission is free. A cash bar will be provided and light cocktail fare will be served.
The Live Auction gala, one of the Bay Area's most anticipated cultural events of the year, takes place on Saturday, October 26th. Doors open at 6pm and the auction begins promptly at 7pm. Complimentary champagne, wine, heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served. Admission to the Live Auction – always a sellout event -- is reserved for ticket holders.
And for the third consecutive year, the ICA is offering visitors a free audio tour of the auction exhibition. The ICA introduced the use of mobile technologies in the auction galleries to offer visitors a more engaging and interactive experience. The popular self-guided audio tour is accessible to visitors through their mobile phones. The audio tour includes recordings by the exhibiting artists, giving visitors more insight into the works on view and for sale.
